| "Duh" List
These are the things we can all do that are so simple and common sense, you just have to say, "duh".
- Use less water. You'll decrease the amount of water that must be treated with chemicals before entering rivers, streams, and oceans.
- Unplug appliances when not in use. Miscellaneous appliances can be putting out greenhouse carbon dioxide when not in use. Look around: hair dryers, shavers, vacuum cleaners, coffee makers, microwaves.
- Re-use when possible. This is even better than recycling as there is no energy or material spent in the process; and the price is right too.
- Let your child ride the bus to school.
- Turn off lights, fans, radios when leaving a room.
- Look for natural alternatives to cleaning chemicals. See some great cleaning tips below.
- Compost leaves, twigs and other bio-waste instead of bagging it in plastic where it will end up in a landfill. If you must bag yard waste, please use a biobag that is compostable and biodegradable.
Green Cleaning Tips
- For cleaning crayon marks off the wall, mix a paste of baking soda and water and lightly brush the area with an old toothbrush.
- Put some baking soda in your vacuum bag to reduce mustiness and pet smells.
- To remove red wine stains pour salt on it, wait about 15 minutes until dry then vacuum it up.
- Salt can be used to clean and remove smells from cutting boards.
- To clean grease, try white vinegar; the acid base cuts through grease.
Green Gardening Tips
- Discourage neighborhood cats and dogs from playing in your garden by sprinkling some fine ground black pepper in their favorite areas.
- Minimize wasted water by checking to be sure the water from your sprinkler hits your target areas, not the driveway or street.
- Water early in the morning so the water can soak into the ground or lawn, not evaporate in the heat of the day.
- A mix of vinegar and salt can be used to keep weeds and grass out of walkway and driveway cracks.
- Mix a tablespoon of baking soda, a teaspoon of (bio-compatible) liquid dish detergent and a gallon of water to make a spray for treating roses against black spot fungus.
- Baking soda can deter ants - pour a solid line in areas of activity and they won't cross it.
